AMBULATORY BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT
ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring) is a medical device used to measure a person's blood pressure over an extended period, usually 24 hours.
Unlike a one-off blood pressure measurement performed in the doctor's office, ABPM enables blood pressure to be monitored throughout the day and night, including during daily activities and sleep. This enables the physician to gain a better understanding of how blood pressure varies over an extended period and in different situations.
ABPM is generally performed using a small portable device that the patient wears during the monitoring period. This device is connected to a cuff which is placed around the arm and periodically inflated to measure blood pressure. The data is automatically recorded by the device and can be analyzed later by the physician.
ABPM is often used to diagnose and assess hypertension, particularly in cases where blood pressure seems to vary considerably over time, or where it is difficult to obtain accurate measurements during office visits.
It can also be useful for monitoring the effectiveness of blood pressure medication, and for detecting any fluctuations in blood pressure during the day and night.
